The Chapel of St Peter & St Paul

Our neoclassical chapel looks almost as it did when it was finished in 1789 by James ‘Athenian’ Stuart in a neoclassical style, along with nautical motifs to make the Naval Pensioners feel at home. The altarpiece, painted by American-born artists Benjamin West, depicts the Biblical story of St Paul and his shipwreck at Malta.

The Chapel is full of examples of wonderful craftsmanship and artistry. Perhaps the most iconic is the tessellating pattern on the Chapel ceiling, giving the illusion of domes on the coved ceiling, which replaced the previous flat ceiling that was burned in a fire.
