In 1620, the first settlers from Europe made a perilous journey across the Atlantic from England to America in the famous ship the Mayflower. Centuries later, in 1957, a replica, built in Devon and named Mayflower II, set off on the same journey. It was to be presented to the American people as a symbol of Anglo-American friendship. As Mayflower II was about to set sail, someone from the crowd of spectators and well-wishers stepped forward and presented the crew with a small black kitten saying, ‘the ship has to have a cat, it brings good luck!’ The kitten was Felix! After 2 months of fun and games on board during the crossing, he arrived safely and went on to make his home in America just as the first settlers had done.
